Importing raster files into MicroStation as type 87/88 elements can cause colour information to be lost. Type 87/88 elements can only contain colours present in the attached MicroStation colour palette, restricting the number of colours to 256, or 8-bit. Importing a 24-bit colour image causes colour information loss and can lead to low quality prints.

Bentley Advanced Map Finishing data can be attached to type 87/88 raster elements to link to original raster files. When Bentley Advanced Map Finishing prints raster elements with these links, the data from the original raster file is taken rather than the design file. The design file may contain inferior data and can use a lower resolution type 87/88 element to improve the screen refresh time. As long as the matching raster files are present during printing, maximum quality raster output is obtained.
